The Arnos Vale Hotel is a 29-room beachside hotel set in stunning grounds and offering wonderful bird-watching and snorkelling.
I last stayed at the Arnos Vale Hotel in 1988. Even then it was in need of some TLC. It hasn't kept pace with the development of tourism on Tobago and poor management plus lack of investment has made the hotel the biggest 'lost opportunity' on the island. Although nominally rated as a 3-star property, many would say that this hotel no longer deserves a star rating.
The Arnos Vale boast the best hotel location on the island. The 450-acre grounds are stunning; the birdlife is amongst the best on the island; it is situated in a beautiful Caribbean bay with lovely sandy beach and safe swimming and boasts some of the best snorkelling on the island.
It is terribly sad that this hotel has been so mis-managed. How does it survive? A few diehards return year after year. I was one of these - until the early '90s when standards dropped below acceptable levels. Sadly the hotel is now simply an embarassment to the local hospitality industry. Non-residents visiting the beach quickly realise the hotel's attitude and philosophy when they visit the hotel's beach or main bar - the most expensive drinks on Tobago. In fact you can pay less in a top London hotel.

Nestled against the gentle slopes of a 450 acre tropical paradise teeming with rare and beautiful birds, the Arnos Vale Hotel itself is set into the hillside overlooking the Caribbean Sea, whilst the beautifully landscaped gardens slope gently down to a secluded, sandy beach. Just off-shore a pristine coral reef boasts some of the best snorkelling on the island.
Formally a thriving sugar plantation, these days Arnos Vale is a tranquil retreat from the pressures of modern-day living. Like Tobago itself, this elegant resort is a place of quiet charm and unspoiled natural wonder - a place where time slows down and the only responsibility you have is to sit back, relax and enjoy your stay.
Tobago is a nature-lover's paradise with many visitors coming to experience the amazing variety of plants, birds and animals that are testament to the island's South American heritage. In keeping with its setting the Arnos Vale Hotel is also very close to nature and we intend to keep things that way! Our guests often enjoy local entertainment such as calypso or steel bands, but don't expect to find here the non-stop nightlife offered by so many other resorts. At Arnos Vale we prefer to respect the beauty sleep of our feathered friends!
Every afternoon at 4pm the hotel comes alive with birdsong as we begin our unique tea service. As guests enjoy a delicious afternoon tea a stunning array of tropical birds join you to be fed by hand. This special bird watching ceremony is well-known by birdwatchers all over the world and should definitely not be missed.
In the evenings relax with a tropical cocktail, expertly prepared by one of our barmen, and enjoy the glorious views of our spectacular Caribbean sunsets. Then round off your evening with a sumptuous four-course dinner. Our chef uses only the best and freshest local produce to create an exquisite variety of local and international dishes...the perfect end to another day in our tropical paradise!
All guest rooms have private baths and are air conditioned. Cottages are set on the hill in quiet gardens with magnificent views of the sea and spectacular sunsets. Other rooms and suites are located close to the swimming pool with its swim-up bar the "Pirate Blenny", and the beach restaurant the "MahiMahi". Both the restaurant and the bar are open throughout daylight hours to serve you breakfast, lunch and snacks and cool refreshments.
Some rooms and suites are in individual cottages, like the famous "Crow's Nest", which has seen distinctive visitors such as Her Royal Highness, Princess Margaret of England throughout her honeymoon, or members of Pop Music's greatest band, the Beatles.
We also offer tennis courts and table tennis. If Golf is your game we will happily provide transport to the nearby 18 hole championship course "Mt. lrvine", designed by CommanderJones. (5 mins by car) Arnos Vale Hotel, the perfect location for your vacation, your wedding, your honeymoon or for your bird-watching or natural history society. We also offer an in-house car rental service (via the hotel or AJM Tours) and a private plane for chartering day tours (AJM Tours) to the Grenadines from Tobago.
